The week of March 21-27 saw the efforts of AUBG-ers to increase environmental awareness. The annual Environment Week was organized by the AUBG Green Campus Committee, Better Community Club (BCC), PTPI, and was also supported by other clubs and students. Junior Aneliya Atanasova, BCC coordinator of the event for the last three years, said that this year more clubs got involved in the event.
Traditional initiatives such as cleaning up the Bistritsa river flowing near the campus and tree planting were held. Among the fresh events were Constructing the Future which featured two installations between the Skaptopara 2 Residence Hall and Balkanski Academic Center (BAC), and the Treasure from Trash wellness program which provided ideas how to create useful objects out of everyday trash.
For the first time, the Environment Week organizers announced a video competition and three student teams submitted their projects. First-year students Temenuzhka Panayotova and Nina Brkuljan won the competition and was awarded with $200 debited to her AUBG account. Dilyana Gramadarova, PTPI president, said that the criteria for the winner's video was have an environmental footprint.
The Environment week concluded with the celebration of the international Earth Hour starting 7:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 26, when people all over the world are encouraged to switch their lights off in order to save energy. At that time, a joint concert between AUBG and the South West University (SWU) was held in the field behind the Balkanski Academic Center (BAC). The majority of rooms on campus still had their lights on, however. “We cannot influence everyone and force [them] to start acting eco-friendly … but it [is] worth it,” Atanasova said.
